Lake Mburo National Park
Lake Mburo National Park is the smallest of Uganda’s savanna National Parks that lies on ancient Precambrian metamorphic rocks that date back more than 500 million years. The destination is usually considered as a compact stopover that’s conveniently close to the highway that connects Kampala to western parks including Bwindi Impenetrable Forest & Queen Elizabeth National Park – useful if you need a breather before you continue the far away journey.
Wildlife game viewing here is less than dramatic. The hilly landscape is pretty, but heavy vegetation conceals the wildlife from view. There are no elephant or lion because of an unstable past where wildlife was almost entirely wiped out. However, it’s the only place in Uganda where you’re likely to see large herds of impala, zebra, eland and the rare sitatunga antelope.
Activities
Walking trails
The area is outstanding for walking, the terrain is easy going and in the company of a good guide a very productive option. Areas of particular interest are the Rubanga Forest on the western side of Lake Mburo which is good for forest birds; the Rwonyo viewing platform overlooking a salt-lick. $10 for about 2 hours.
Game drives
The park has a well-developed network of roads on the eastern side of the park. The game moves and congregates seasonally. Night drives are permitted. $25 per guide in the vehicle.
Boat trips on Lake Mburo
The jetty at Rwonyo Camp is a starting point for a 2 or so hour boat trip scouring the Lake Mburo shoreline for birds, hippos and game drawn to the water’s edge. Well worth it at $5/person!
